How Great Thou Art is based on a Swedish traditional tune and a poem by Carl Boberg. Written in 1885, this hymn has become one of the most famous in the world. According to a survey by BBC, How Great Thou Art was voted as the favorite hymn of the United Kingdom.
In America, a 2001 survey by Christianity today found the hymn to be less popular… it only ranked #2. Not a bad ranking given the thousands of hymns still published in hymnals around the world today.
Many artists have recorded covers of their own version of How Great Thou Art. Recently Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill performed the song at the CMA music awards show. The video has gone on to receive millions of views on YouTube.
How Great Thou Art – Lyrics
O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art.
And when I think of God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow with humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
