Widely considered the most popular hymn of all time, Amazing Grace was written in 1779 by English poet and clergyman, John Newton.
Heavily influenced by Newton’s involvement with, and ultimately rejection of, the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the words of this hymn are filled with a message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God.
Amazing Grace has been recorded by thousands of musicians over the years and is considered the quinessential iconic song that represents Christian Hymnody.
Amazing Grace – Lyrics
Amazing grace! how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch; like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
The Lord hath promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.
